奇跡の弟子入り。
インタビューと物書きで忙殺されていた日々の中、とてもハッピーなことが起きた。あのパンナー・リットグライに弟子入りできた。日本人では初めての弟子かもしれない。パンナー・リットグライとは、『マッハ！』で驚異の身体能力を見せつけたトニー・ジャーの師匠。近作では天才試写でも取り上げた『七人のマッハ!!!!!!!』の主演、ダン・チューポンの師匠でもあるタイ随一のアクション監督だ。僕の、彼に対するリスペクト具合はこのブログを遡ってもらえればわかるし、映画『マッハ！』をご覧いただければその意味はご理解いただけるだろう。そんな関係で、今回、弟子入りにつながったパンナー・リットグライとダン・チューポンへのインタビューは、この一年でも特別、個人的な気持ちの入った取材となった。昨年、『マッハ！』でトニー・ジャーにもインタビューしたのだけれど、彼とパンナーとダン・チューポンに共通するのが、非常に人懐っこい点。子供のようにキラキラした目でこちらを見つめ、真摯に嬉しそうに質問に答えてくれる。おそらく人間が好きなのだろう。アクション映画についてかなり深い質問を繰り返す。僕自身、彼らを強くリスペクトしていることもあり、あっという間に意気投合。実際にパンナーにスタントを教えてもらう展開に。その結果、特別にパンナー公認で弟子にしてもらった。パンナー・リットグライ、ダン・チューポン、本当にありがとう。
ニコラス・ケイジ主演の新作『ロード・オブ・ウォー』の監督、アンドリュー・ニコルにもインタビュー。取材前から宣伝担当者に、「彼は相当賢くて核心を突く話は大抵はぐらかされるよ」とアドバイスを受ける。『ターミナル』の原案も作ったアンドリュー・ニコルは事実を基にアレンジを加えて物語を作る手法を得意とする。が、その事実に対して彼自身の考えを作品には反映させていない。今回のインタビューでは、それはどういう意図なのかを聞き出そうと試みた。彼は映画を社会を映す鏡と捉えており、そこには意識的な要素を加えず、判断を観客に委ねるという。アメリカと武器商人の関係をエンターテイメント性豊かに描いたこの作品で人々は何を思うのだろう。アンドリュー・ニコル監督の視点がフラットで、片側の正義を押し付けるものではないがゆえに、本作は恐るべき問題提起となっている。
